I’ve never heard of People to People before; are they legitimate?
People to People International is celebrating its 53rd year of world service in
2009. The program was started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 as a way
to bring the citizens of different countries together. Student Ambassador
Programs began in 1963 and since that time, more than 200,000 students have
participated as Student Ambassadors.
What is the Student Ambassador Program?
People to People has a clear mission: to bring American students closer to
people and cultures around the world. We do this by providing direct and unique
interaction in many settings. Student Ambassadors visit schools, get to know
family life through dinners and overnight stays, absorb world culture through
theater or music, meet with government experts, and have “insider” visits at
major cultural sites such as castles and memorials. Student Ambassadors prepare
for this experience well in advance, and are asked to keep a daily journal and
participate actively in all activities for academic credit. Working as a team
with other students and making friends in a well-supervised, exploring
environment teaches flexibility and builds leadership skills. The overall
experience of comparing one’s own culture with the world is a maturing process
that lasts the rest of their lives.
