Student Interview

When should interviews be conducted?
Students should be contacted to schedule an interview within three days of application. Students should be interviewed no later than three weeks after they apply. The primary delegation leader is responsible for organizing the interviews, and other delegation leaders are expected to help conduct the interviews.

Where do I find the names of students to be interviewed?
When students enroll, their information will appear on your "Delegation Enrollments" report. To access this report, select New Enrollment under the Management Tools link in the navigation on the left.

How are interviews usually conducted?
Generally, interviews are done in groups. Depending on circumstances, they can also be done individually or over the phone. Materials on conducting interviews will be sent to each delegation leader within a few weeks of being assigned to a delegation.

For assistance conducting the interviews, please refer to the 2009 Delegation Leader Guide or ask your area director

What forms should students bring to their interviews, and what should I do with the documents?
Students should submit the following materials at the time of the interview:
• A completed interview questionnaire
• Three recommendation forms
Mail all student recommendation forms to the program office. Keep the interview questionnaire forms for all accepted students. If you decline or conditionally accept a student, please send both the recommendation and questionnaire forms to the program office

Do I need to give the students anything after the interview?
After the interview, all students should receive a blue People to People folder with a “Next Steps” piece in it. Also in the blue folder should be all of the assigned leaders’ biographies.

Which leader received the blue folders and "Next Steps: piece?
Only primary leaders received the blue folders and “Next Steps” piece in their Leader Kit. For a high school delegation, the primary leader would have received 40 folders and 40 “Next Steps” pieces. Junior high and elementary leaders should have received 20 folders and 20 “Next Steps” pieces.

If you need more of these materials, please contact your area coordinator.

How soon should I contact students regarding the results of their interview?
Students who are accepted should be contacted within 72 hours of the interview.

What if I feel a particular student should not be accepted into the program?
Students who are questionable cannot be declined until after you have contacted your program director or area coordinator. Conditional acceptance is an option. See the instructions on conducting interviews in your Delegation Leader Guide.
