Program Extensions

What is a program extension?
Program extensions allow students and leaders to continue the overseas adventure for several days beyond the end of the scheduled program. Extensions are only available for specific itineraries (indicated in the application book) and in designated areas. Students must be accompanied by People to People delegation leader at a ratio of 9 students to 1 leader. Extensions typically will have fewer students and offer more immersive, hands-on experiences while remaining structured and safe.

Leaders should ask their regional manager or admissions advisor if an extension is available in their area

How do students enroll for an extension?
Students will learn if an extension is available to them from the delegation leader who is sponsoring the extension. Students may apply for extensions directly over the phone by calling our office or through a paper application they receive from their delegation leader who is participating in the extension.

How can students participate on an extension if it is not offered in their area?
Students may elect to travel with a delegation outside of their local area in order to participate in an extension. Students who are interested must contact our office prior to February 1 in order to be enrolled in an extension outside of their area.

Students who select this option will be responsible for traveling to and from the departure airport or the gateway city. People to People Ambassador Programs may be able to arrange the travel to and from the local airport to the departure city, but we must be notified of your intention to do so prior to February 1.

What is included in the program extension?
The program extension includes planned activities, meals, accommodations, and transportation, which are unique to each program. Each extension has a unique emphasis and offers unmatchable People to People experiences specifically designed for these smaller groups.

What is not included in the program extension?
Items that are covered in the student’s tuition for the extensions would include any planned activities by the delegation leader and students in addition to the program. If the leaders and students elect to plan and participate in an excursion outside of the program, then the cost of these excursions is the responsibility of each participant. If the participants miss a planned activity or meal, the cost of supplementing the meal is the responsibility of the participant.

What if a student needs to withdraw from an extension?
Due to the additional preparation and planning for extensions, students who have enrolled for an extension must notify the program office no later than 90 days prior to departure if they need to withdraw from the extension portion of the program. If a student fails to notify our office, the program extension will be billed to the student’s account.
