Rafer Johnson
Olympic Gold Medalist

Olympic gold and silver medalist Rafer Johnson traveled the globe and set records as a young man. He was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1960 and starred in movies and TV shows. His greatest roles have been in community service, including years on People to People Student Ambassador Programs board of directors. He once set up People to People chapters at colleges and ran the organization's West Coast office.

Johnson lived in poverty and suffered a serious foot injury as a child, yet he achieved greatness. His personal philosophy to be "The Best That I Can Be" is also the title of his autobiography.

From his Olympic journeys to Australia and Italy, Johnson shares the joy of Student Ambassadors. "I can't think of anything that would add more to our lives, give more depth to our lives, than travel around the world. ... It opens our eyes to people across the oceans who are in many, many ways just like we are."
